Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels, resulting from either insufficient insulin production (Type 1) or insulin resistance (Type 2). Symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision. Over 400 million people are affected globally, with 30 million in North America. The global market for diabetes drugs and therapies is valued at $50 billion and is steadily growing. Current treatments include insulin therapy, oral hypoglycemics, and GLP-1 receptor agonists. Drug development in diabetes offers great potential, given the growing prevalence of the disease and the need for improved treatments, especially for Type 2 diabetes and those at risk of complications.
