Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Common symptoms include convulsions, loss of consciousness, and muscle rigidity. Globally, approximately 50 million people suffer from epilepsy, with 3.4 million affected in North America. The global market for epilepsy drugs is valued at $10 billion and continues to grow. Current treatments include antiepileptic drugs such as valproate, levetiracetam, and lamotrigine, although they may not work for all patients. Developing new treatments could be highly beneficial for pharmaceutical companies, as many patients still experience uncontrolled seizures and there is an ongoing need for better, more effective therapies.
